This short video depicts a paper-mache piñata man referencing the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale “The Emperor’s New Clothes." Small money bags each containing $.50 in pennies will be given away to individuals as a symbol of reward and incentive for their support and silence. The desire for universal political control created a disturbing rift between wealth and the overall needs of the vast majority of people. This economic division is evident in all of humanity. It is commonly understood that the juxtaposition of Capitalism and Democracy depends upon a very fragile balance. The contemporary acceptance of Capitalism’s domination over Democracy has allowed economic principles to undermine this fragile balance.

 

The Emperor | Pennies for Silence addresses the symbolic promise of economic rewards that allow the dismissal of Democracy’s ideals with the promise of individual reward and great wealth. The gifting of 1150 bags of money is an acknowledgement of our acceptance and support of the loss of democratic ideals.
