BADLANDS

badland, n.

a region marked by intricate erosional sculpturing, scanty vegetation, and fantastically formed hills.

BADLANDS is a series of altered landscapes inspired by the surreal views and fantastical geologic formations I encounter in the wilderness of northwestern New Mexico. Intrigued by this enigmatic place, I read the landscape as a text of ancient narratives. By exposing diverse image layers, I seek to reveal strange parallel worlds beneath the seemingly impenetrable rocky surfaces.

Whether dealing with surface topography or interiors of the body or imaginary spaces, I employ various mapping, marking, drawing and imaging techniques in an ongoing exploration of unpredictability and mystery occurring in a mythic terrain, often using data as visual language. I use these methods to shake images loose from their referents; instead of remaining in the realm of certainty of “You are here,” my investigations shift the inquiry to “Where are You?”
